Singapore is off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometers (85 mi) north of the equator, in the Southeast Asian region of the Asian continent. It is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north, and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south.

A city-state, Singapore is the world's fourth leading financial centre and a cosmopolitan world city, playing a key role in international trade and finance.

Singapore has a diverse population of 5 million people made up of Chinese, Malays, Indians, Caucasians, and Asians. It has the sixth-highest percentage of foreigners in the world (42%), who makes up 50% of the service sector. The country is the second most densely populated in the world after Monaco.

According to government statistics, the population of Singapore as of 2009 was 4.99 million, of whom 3.73 million were Singaporean citizens. There were 3.2 million citizens in 2009. Various Chinese linguistic groups formed 74.2% of Singapore's residents, Malays 13.4%, Indians 9.2%, while Eurasians, Arabs and other groups formed 3.2%.

The population of Singapore has the sixth-highest percentage of foreigners globally. 42% of the population in Singapore are foreigners and foreigners make up 50% of the service sector. Most foreigners come from China, Malaysia, Philippines, North America, Middle East, Europe, Australia and India.

 
 

FPCC and Singapore

     
 

The SingHealth group of companies had invited the Foreign Placement Coordinating Centre to visit Singapore in order to discuss employment training and research opportunities for Sri Lankan doctors.

.Sri Lankan Delegation to Singapore

The Sri Lankan delegation was led by Dr Ravindra Ruberu, Secretary of Health with  two office bearers of the Foreign Placement Coordinating Centre in order to explore employment, training and research opportunities for Sri Lankan doctors  in Singapore.  The visit took place  during the second week of July 2010 upon an invitation made by the SingHealth Group which was facilitated by HE Mrs. Jayathree Samarakone, Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Singapore.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between SingHealth group of hospitals and Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka for the areas for cooperation including job placement, training and research opportunities. On behalf of the Ministry of Health, Dr Ravindra Ruberu secretary of the ministry singed for the MOU and Professor Tan Ser Kiat, Group Chief Executive Officer signed the MOU representing the SingHealth group of Hospitals.

The prime objective of the mission was accomplished following which several avenues were opened for Sri Lankan doctors in  the fields of employment, training and research  whilst  strengthening the bilateral ties between the two countries.

Employment Opportunities at Singapore
 

Subsequent to the above mission , the Foreign Placement Coordinating Centre has maintained the dialog with the SingHealth Group in finding employment , training and research opportunities for Sri Lankan doctors in Singapore. As a result the SingHealth authorities have expressed their willingness to provide carrier opportunities for Sri Lankan doctors.

A delegation representing the  SingHealth Group visited Sri Lanka from the 12th and 13th of August 2010 in order to finalize the modalities in implementation placing Sri Lankan doctors at hospitals attached to SigHealth Group in Singapore.

The Singaporean officials met with the potential Sri Lankan candidates during this mission  from the 12th and 13th of August 2010 . The Foreign Placement Coordinating Centre has been kept informed that the Singaporean authorities wish to employ Sri Lankan doctors in the fields of Ophthalmology , Pathology etc. Contract Period of Maximally 2  years and  salary is in parallel with the salary of equal grade doctors in Singapore. This will be subject to finalize in negotiation with the Singapore authorities.

Employment Opportunities in Ophthalmology

Singapore National Eye Centre delegation led by Professor Donald Tang, Director of the Singapore National Eye Centre met the Foreign Placement Coordinating Centre Officials on Monday 2nd of August 2010 at the Ministry of Health Sri Lanka in order to discuss carrier prospects for Sri Lankan doctors in Singapore. 

The foundation steps for this discussion were laid during the Sri Lankan delegation to Singapore in July 2010.  It was transpired at this meeting that potential employment opportunities exist in Singapore for three categories of medical professionals in Ophthalmology.

  • Category  01 - Board certified Ophthalmologists
     

  • Category 02 - Post Graduate Trainees in Ophthalmology
     
  • Category 03 -Medical Officers with experience in Ophthalmology
 

The Singapore National Eye Centre Officials were preferred Board Certified Ophthalmologists with MD and either MRCS (Glas)  or MRCS (Edin).

This will also provide an opportunity for doctors who have completed their Post Graduate training in Sri Lanka to complete their mandatory overseas training programme attached to the Singapore Eye Centre.

Furthermore, it was transpired that the Singapore Government would initiate a decentralised pilot project to screen its growing diabetic population. Thus, they wish to employ a few competent Sri Lankan doctors of the non specialist category to perform ophthalmology screening at the peripheral centres in Singapore. Senior House Officers and Medical Officers competent in Ophthalmology will best suit for category 03.

 
Requirements
 

    1. To be a in one of the following categories

 
  • Board certified ophthalmologists – MD, MRCS (Glas) / MRCS (Edin)

  • Sri Lankan Post Graduate Trainees in Ophthalmology

  • Senior House Officer or Medical Officer in Ophthalmology

    2. High Command in the English Language with preferably IELTS > 7           

 

Terms and Conditions

 

             Contract Period of Maximally 2 years

 

             Salary is in parallel with the salary of equal grade doctors in Singapore. This will be
